Goal Updates 4/4

Time for my bi-weekly check in.

Goals

1. Read at least one new book a month
The month has just begun and I’m on the lookout for a new good book. I was simultaneously reading ProBlogger last month along with my school work and I have almost completed it. It is an all around great reference for anyone starting out in blogging. It covers everything from deciding on a name, choosing your niche, how to set everything up, monetization and much more. The book even includes a link to the ProBlogger website that is exclusive for his book readers. As far as this month goes, I will probably be reading a book that goes over travel (any suggestions?) but I’d also like to read a fiction novel to help me relax. (Once again, any suggestions?)

2. Make $800 in side hustle income by May 1st
I’ve actually been doing pretty great! I’ve made some extra money tutoring algebra, blog consulting, and through my affiliate program. I can’t wait to get my first check! Seeing the profitability of your hard work is really inspiring to work harder. Additional plans I have for further increasing my savings are having a garage sale next weekend, selling on eBay and craigslist for the larger more expensive  items, additional consulting work and starting to look for some virtual assistant work and other online endeavors. This coming month has so much potential, I can’t wait to see how it goes.

3. Work out at least 3 days a week
I’ve unfortunately been losing weight again thanks to some personal stresses but I have been getting in my workouts. I’m trying to stay away from too much cardio so I’ve been doing pilates, some body weight workouts and yoga before bed. Ah, in just one month I’ll be able to do yoga on the beach. Can’t wait.

4. Eat breakfast at home and bring my lunch to work every day
I’m not sure why this has proven to be such a difficult task to me. My main issue is that I don’t want to make a sandwich the night before and have it be soggy but I don’t wake up early enough to fix one in the morning and I have a really hard time getting up when I do without trying to make it earlier. I would be bringing leftovers but in a house with 6 people there’s no such thing.

5. Blog at least 4 days a week
Today is day 4! I am very happy with myself for keeping up with the blog despite the challenges this week and last week have thrown my way. Blogging is such a great way to escape and concentrate on something that is fulfilling. I really suggest anyone that’s intrigued by it to give it a try, even if you only write for yourself and never make it public.

No Spend Challenge

No spend challenge is over! It wasn’t a complete success but it wasn’t a total loss either. I wasn’t able to keep up with not spending on food but I was more conscientious of my gas usage and not spending money or splurging during the day. My only purchases were a birthday gift and an article of clothing I needed for an event. Now that the month is over I’ve made my first big purchase (planned one!) of a new compact waterproof camera to take with me on my travels! And it’s nice to not have such a bulky piece of equipment hanging around my neck.

Making Friends as an Adult

I remember as a child going to the first day of class and feeling like I had been introduced to a whole new world. A fresh new lot of faces every year. More kids meant more friends to be made. As an adult, making friends has become much more challenging.

When we are children we have less filters and lower standards of what we require in a friend. Any new person we meet has the potential to be a friend or playmate. We don’t care what they are wearing or their political views. We just see someone that could bring joy and happiness to our lives.

It seems that as we grow older we become more set in our ways; not only in how we live but also in who we choose to spend our time with. Familiarity and comfort become a scapegoat and opening up to new possibilities and relationships becomes too intimidating.

We as a society have decided that being an adult means being a mom, a dad, an employee, a CEO, a husband or a wife and more than often lastly, a friend. There is little room for old friendships and no time to develop new ones.

As time passes by we wonder why we become so depressed, why we feel so empty, lonely and unfulfilled. Humans need to feel connected. We are social beings. Starving that social need is not healthy or natural.

There was an article written by a group of Stanford and Waterloo professers that stated “When people’s sense of social connectedness is threatened, their ability to self-regulate suffers; for instance their IQ performance drops.” Along with this effect were many other negative reactions that were recognized by those lacking social interaction or connectivity.

So why do we do this? Why do we pick and choose who we can and can’t be friends with based on appearance or religion or political views? Why must we have everything in common and not disagree on anything?  Why are we so scared of developing new bonds with new people? Of course it is possible that things will turn out poorly or it may be a dud of a friendship, but that never stopped us as kids.

I challenge you today to go out and make a new friend. Seek out someone you think you might have at least one thing in common with. You might like their shoes, like a book they’re considering purchasing, hear them mention a topic that interests you. Strike up a conversation with them. Reach out to someone and find a sense of belonging in that moment.

Tattoo Tuesday

If you haven’t noticed yet, I am quite fond of tattoos. So much so, that I’d like to start a series of posts dedicated to them. The posts may not be every week but I will keep them fairly often. I will post my tattoos, friend’s and random ones I fall in love with online.

To start this series off I’ve chosen to feature my personal favorite of my tattoos. One that holds special meaning to me.

tattoo tuesday

This is my zombie pin-up babe. This tattoo has very sentimental meaning to me. I had a lot of physical ailments as a child and each of the scars that my zombie has represents some kind of illness or ailment I went through. The banner is pretty self explanatory. As Nazareth says, “Love Hurts”.

Travel Itinerary for 2014

travel itinerary

The past 24 months of my life have brought on many life changes. I feel now that I am more independent and self-reliant than I’ve ever been. I know that this comes with age but I really am for the first time on my own. One of the down sides of always having been in a relationship is that you are always tied down to someone. You may be able to do a weekend getaway but really being in a committed relationship that you want to continue to pursue will get in the way of just getting up and going on adventures, or at least it did for me.

One of the new parts of my life that I have discovered a passion for is travel. I have always loved spontaneous trips in the past and have tried to make them a large part of my life. Now that I have the resources and freedom to do so I plan on seeing a lot more of the world.

Over the next few years I have planned out quite the expansive list of trips that I will be taking and adventures I will set out on. This year is going to be the small start to get me used to a life of travel.

My trips for 2014 include:

April: Austin, TX –

A few friends and I will be setting out Easter Friday to our ranch rental just south of Austin, TX. We’re planning on visiting downtown Austin, floating the river in San Marcos, paddle boarding and seeing the touristy sites downtown. (Have to get them out of the way sometime.)

May: Panama City Beach, FL and New Orleans, LA –

My mom, sister and I will be heading out to Florida at the end of May to spend three days snorkeling, getting tattoos and enjoying getting a nice tan. While we’re there I plan on spending a day at a national park near our condo to get my snorkeling in as well as some bird and wild life watching. Near the end of the trip I will be going to see my buddy Darren at Black Cat Tattoo to get some more work done on my arms.

Once we finish up in Panama City Beach we will be heading to New Orleans, LA for a good time visiting historical sites, enjoying some creole and maybe even visit a VooDoo-er? We were able to use AirBNB to get a great rate on a really nice little loft style apartment right outside of the French Quarter. I’m hoping I run across some Originals while we’re there.

July: San Francisco, CA –

Hey fellow lady bloggers, anyone else going to the BlogHer conference? In July my mom, my sister and I will be headed back out to visit sunny California to attend a blogging conference for a weekend and then heading out to San. Fran. to explore all that Cali has to offer.

With all of those great trips planned I will still have 4 days of vacation to use this year! I’m hoping that I will get the opportunity to go to the mountains sometime this winter to try my hand at skiing. Other than that I’m sure I will have plenty of camping trips throughout Texas and Oklahoma.

Any suggestions for things to do on any of my travels this year?

Liebster Award

20 Something Syndrome has been nominated for the Liebster award by Project Ikonz (shoutout and thanks man!) Well technically it was almost a week ago,  but I’ve finally gotten around to tackling this!

Liebster Award:

If you are nominated for a Liebster award this is what you should do:
1. Post the award on your blog
2. Thank the blogger who presented the award to you and link back to their blog
3. Answer the questions given to you by the nominator
4. Nominate 5 to 10 bloggers with less than 200 followers
5. Create 10 questions for your nominees to answer
6. Notify your nominees by posting on their blog

My answers for Mr. Ikonz

1. Where would you go on a first date if you were on a tight budget?
My ideal date on a budget would be anything outdoors. It could be hiking, mountain biking, camping (assuming it was with a boyfriend not just a date), anything really. Honestly the quality of the date is more of the experience than the atmosphere. I could have just as much fun going to McDonald’s and being silly and having good conversation as I could going to a fancy restaurant in downtown.
2. What would you spend your last $10 on?
Is it my last $10 because of the apocalypse? If so then I would buy some beer and a burger from whataburger and enjoy the heck out of my last few moments. If not, I would invest it so I could make more money.
3. How old were you when you first started your journey to financial freedom?
Let’s see how old am I? 26… So I was 25 :)… maybe 24.
4. What do your family/friends think about your blog and your financial journey?
I’m not entirely sure what my family thinks about it, they haven’t really said much in regards to it. My friends are all very supportive of my blog and help me promote it as much as they can. My financial journey I tend to keep to myself because I don’t know many people that care to hear about it but I always help any friends that ask me something they know I’m knowledgeable of.
5. What do you do for fun when not blogging?
Fun? What’s that? Well, I suppose I spend time with friends, take random classes like painting and dance and read a lot. I can also be found at the gym when school’s not in session.
6. Favourite destination for a holiday and how you would get there?
In a dream world I would be backpacking through Europe, New Zealand and Australia… one day. I would get there by plane because I have not yet mastered the skill of walking on water.
7. Favourite pair of Nikes?

I would definitely rock these bad boys.
8. What would you count as blogging success?
I would consider blogging success to be once you have gained a sense of community with regulars who are returning to your blog to read all of the new information you post and who feel comfortable commenting and conversing with you.
9. Do you wear a watch or check the time on your iPhone/smartphone?
My wrists are too small for watches. I used to wear a Lilo and Stitch watch but I decided I had to grow up at some point. It’s really disheartening though because I think watches look so classy. Oh, but to answer the question I check the time on my phone.. or computer.
10. The biggest win you’ve had in life?
Ah man this is always a tough question IMO. I feel like growing into my own person and getting over insecurities is a big win and accomplishment but I have a feeling that’s not how the question was intended to be answered. As far as on paper, I suppose completing some of the certifications I have received felt pretty good.
